He bought even more land until he owned about five times more of what his father left for him. Julia Morgan and Hearst built La Cuesta Encantada, "Enchanted Hill" in Spanish, on the land. Hearst moved away in 1947 because of ill health. Although the house was unfinished, it had 165 rooms, 123 acres of gardens, terraces, pools, and walkways. It is now known as the Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument. A popular tourist attraction, it draws visitors from around the world.

The Expensive: The One

A property nicknamed "The One" hit the market in January 2021 at $340 million. An article in the Architectural Digest said it was the most expensive house in the United States. Developer Nile Niami's 105 000 square foot mega-mansion in Bel Air, California, is half a mile long. It has 21 bedrooms, 42 bathrooms, five swimming pools, a 30-vehicle showroom, a 30-seat movie theater, and a hair and beauty salon.
