The Famous: The White House

The White House in Washington DC, where the President of the United States lives, is the country's most famous house. First occupied by John Adams in 1800, every US President has lived there since then. The Oval Office in the West Wing is the President’s official workplace. The Vice President's office is in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Blair House is for guests. Designed by architect James Hoban, the White House has six floors and a two-story basement, so there's plenty of space!

The Gigantic: Biltmore

George Washington Vanderbilt II erected Biltmore in the late 19th century. Descendants of the famous Vanderbilt family still own the enormous mansion. Modeled on the Château de Blois in France's Loire Valley, it has a floor area of 175 000 square feet. There are more than 250 rooms. Biltmore also contains a fabulous collection of art. It also has beautiful tapestries dating back to the 16th century. It is one of the biggest houses in America, and some say it's the best!

The Beautiful: Fallingwater

Many consider Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater the most beautiful house in America. The house is in the Laurel Highlands in Pennsylvania. Part of the house straddles a waterfall at Bear Run. The building was completed in 1935. Fallingwater has been a National Historic Landmark since 1966. The American Institute of Architects heaped praise on the house. In 1991 they said it was the best example of American architecture.

The Historical: Hearst Castle

In 1865, George Hearst bought 40 000 acres ofland around San Simeon in California. In 1919, his son William inherited it. He bought even more land until he owned about five times more of what his father left for him. Julia Morgan and Hearst built La Cuesta Encantada, "Enchanted Hill" in Spanish, on the land. Hearst moved away in 1947 because of ill health. Although the house was unfinished, it had 165 rooms, 123 acres of gardens, terraces, pools, and walkways. It is now known as the Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument. A popular tourist attraction, it draws visitors from around the world.

The Expensive: The One

A property nicknamed "The One" hit the market in January 2021 at $340 million. An article in the Architectural Digest said it was the most expensive house in the United States. Developer Nile Niami's 105 000 square foot mega-mansion in Bel Air, California, is half a mile long. It has 21 bedrooms, 42 bathrooms, five swimming pools, a 30-vehicle showroom, a 30-seat movie theater, and a hair and beauty salon.
